Obviously signing to a major label was a huge step for the band in terms of potential earnings and exposure but I think they tried a little too hard to fulfil A&M's remit rather than sticking to Robyn's usual uncompromising off-kilter-or-nothing policy. I know that for a lot of our American friends it's hugely important as it opened a portal to the RH canon, but for me it was simply the latest album, albeit a hotly anticipated one. I have a feeling this album could prove to be a little divisive. So on the fourth of January (Monday) I'll begin with songs from Queen Elvis. I'll resume posting again (assuming I'm still alive) on the 27th with the following 1987 songs from A Bad Case of History: If there is any Robyn Hitchcock Christmas song let me know and I'll put it up on the 23rd, otherwise, there will be no entries between the 23rd and the 27th.

I'm doing this last just to add an extra day - normally I should have done it earlier, but would hold it up simultaneiously now, but I'll do it separately so that this brings us up to the 22nd.

I think it's reasonable to guess that this was probably Robyn's best-selling album at the time of release, although albums retrospectively seen as classics like Underwater Moonlight probably have sold more: Globe of Frogs charted as high as 111 on the US Top 200.a number that seems low but in the late eighties probably translated to quite a few records sold, especially over the 15 weeks that it was on the chart. Many of them would go on to great success, others would founder.

I guess that Robyn's graduation to a major label is the big story here - a perrennial indie artist, I assume Robyn got swept up in the mad rush to sign indie acts in 1986-1988 era, wherin REM, 10,000 Maniacs Husker Du, New Order the Replacements, the Cure and many other alternative acts suddenly found themselves enslaved signed to major labels. Released in 1988 (exactly when I don't know ) the album may be his most commercially successful it was certainly the one that brought him to my attention with the captivating "Balloon Man", a song which Robyn himself is sick of. Tomorrow I'm going to start on Globe of Frogs by Robyn Hitchcock & the Egyptians.Īs usual biographical information on Robyn is a bit thin.
